Mariachi by Ani DiFranco & Conceived by Beth Orton. Neither are about fall, really, but both remind me of the cooler weather and long shadows we all know are coming.
Thank you for the last Last Chance. It is hauntingly beautiful and grindingly painful. My first thought of course was Bobby Short singing “Autumn in New York” but then there was Frank and Ella and Louis and if you like it rough, Billie Holiday. Different strokes for different blokes. 🤷🏼♂️
Damn, one of my biggest regrets is not seeing Jason and the Scorchers live. Love the list. Curious about your favorite autumn tune that doesn’t literally reference the season - just puts you an autumn mood.
Beautiful compilation I could listen to Neil Youngs Harvest Moon on repeat all day long. Ella and Louis something special. Thanks for the great picks. 😊
Seriously! I thought they kind of blew it by upping the slickness and dialing down the energy on Still Standing. They played half of those songs when I saw them in '85, and they sounded amazing — but when the record finally came out they sounded limp as hell. They never really regained their momentum from there.
Over the years, I have thought a lot about music that pairs well with autumn, my favourite season by far. For me, it's time to listen to Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, Gordon Lightfoot and Laura Nyro as well as the great pop singers like Johnny Mathis, Nancy Wilson, Nat Cole and so many more. It's also time to dig deep into ECM: Kenny Wheeler, John Abercrombie, Jack DeJohnette, Eberhard Weber and Gary Burton as well as the sounds of Isaac Hayes, the O'Jays and Roberta Flack.
To add some song to the playlist, I would choose Miles Davis' recording of Wayne Shorter's 'Fall' from Nefertiti.
Leafy Mysteries off of Weller's Illumination. Beth Orton's Concrete Sky (co-written with Johnny Marr) is, while not explicitly about the fall, very autumnal-sounding to me. Same goes for The Whole of the Moon by The Waterboys...although that might be leaning toward wintertime.
Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward is #1 on my autumn Top 10. And the original version by the songs co-writers Paul Vigrass & Gary Osborne is #2. The song is everything autumn and then some.
September song, the first Lou Reed version
Oooh, that's a good one.

That's a really tough call — probably anything off of Village Green Preservation Society or Odessey and Oracle would do the trick!

Nice to see some love for Mr. Ringenberg & his Scorchers. That band shoulda’ been WAY bigger!

Simon & Garfunkel has always felt like autumn music to me. I'm playing Bookends as we speak!
Nice!
For me it’s a very folk/folk-rock season. And California Dreamin’ has to be right up there.
(Despite “on a winter’s day”)
Especially Raquel's version! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDhAGer1OCs
The Robyn Hitchcock track is new to me - thanks for introducing me to it!!

September Gurls, of course.
I took the liberty of making a Apple music playlist:

Autumn makes me think of football and Fountains of Wayne’s “All Kinds of Time” and it’s wistful lookin back
Awww, that's great — but no "Autumn Stone" on Apple Music?
Whoops! It's there. Updated!
Also found the Captain America Indian Summer as Eugenius.
Well done!
