So glad you covered his passing Dan. My personal fave is Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 covering Look of Love. Mind blowing shift when it gets to the chorus....can’t wait to explore the songs you included.
I don’t know where else to ask this Dan...have you ever written about Laura Nyro? Her motown soul album with LaBelle is absolute perfection to me, and I seem to remember reading she came from the same songwriting group as Bacharach did. (Gonna Take a Miracle is the album.) It’s an era I love but don’t know anything about.
To be honest, I am really not a Laura Nyro fan; a lot of folks whose tastes I respect really dig her, but I generally find her songs to be overly showy and melodramatic. (I do quite like the Gonna Take a Miracle LP, but those songs are all covers of 50s and 60s soul and R&B songs; she didn't write any of that material.) She was about 20 years younger than Bacharach, but she did cut her first single at Bell Sound Studios in NYC, which is the same studio where Dionne Warwick recorded a bunch of her classic Bacharach-David hits.
Bravo, Dan!
Thank you, Cal!
Nice piece.

Oh yeah, that's a fanastic version! I also love Sergio's instrumental rendition of "I Say a Little Prayer" on his My Favorite Things LP...

Same. That one album is great but that’s all I have of hers tbh. But man did they get it right. Thanks again!
