I am so sorry! I used to bike that route (and all over Chicago's north side) often, long before bike lanes. Now I ride in Seattle. I'm really ambivalent about bike lanes. I suppose they must be statistically safer? But most of them are just paint and can be disregarded, and I feel like they create a false sense of safety. Really sorry about this sad loss.
Yeah, I’m not sure what the answer is. I stopped riding my bike a few years back because I simply don’t trust drivers to look out for cyclists - and this being the USA, I can’t afford the potential medical bills.

Hudson Valley has some great bike paths. I have not biked on the road in years.
