Memories of wonderful times spent together with you and an assortment of family and other loved ones with Fran and me based at the Beverly Laurel on the way to somewhere or coming back from somewhere keep flooding back. A pivotal point of happiness in a long and rich life. So many hearts are broken while trying to hold on to those sweet times in the cool of the morning. ❤️🙏🏻🪷
Ohhhh, the Burrito King! I went to the one in Silverlake. Lots of crushed LA dreams to go around. I retreated to Chicago after my 2 year stint, practically malnourished from lack of work/food and in debt, where my freelance biz immediately turned around. Oh, LA....great piece, and I am a big Zevon fan too.
Thank you Dan. I’m late to this album, like, today late😬😅. Beautiful post. You are an Angelino, and I disagree that your (paraphrasing) “LA hopes and dreams” did not pan out. We are of dreams and reality, and look how happy you are today. Your dream is here brother. Much love.
Yes and no — there WAS a Pioneer Chicken on EP and Sunset, but there was also another one over on Alvarado and Temple, which was apparently a big drug-dealing scene "back in the day"...
Great post and hope for the best outcomes for those in SoCal. I too wore out the grooves of Stand In The Fire! Where's George Gruel my road manager?...
I've never been to LA but half a dozen songs from that album and the next one stick in my mind as fresh as back then. I know what I'll be listening to this weekend.
Later on and relistening to it now for the first time in decades and remembering every line. How do we remember things so crisply after so long when they are good? When they are not so good we don't remember them as well.
"You know the sheriff's got his problems too... he's going to take them out on you."
I've long thought that you always know a good movie by the fact that you remember it all. This is even moreso.
I'm amazed how litterally every line is standing out and still so good. Brilliant.
Great post. I also lived in LA for a few years and love Warren Zevon. Only this morning “Desperados” popped up first on my playlist and I thought what a perfect song for LA. One small nitpick - “The Haunted House” - pretty sure the lyric is ‘The Hyatt House’.
2. Good lookin' out and sharing ways for everyone to help our LA friends.
3. I have that same Los Angeles poster in my office! It's an on old promo for American Airlines. My wife picked it and one for Northwest up at a garage sale for me.
Great piece about a great album, Dan! Sending strength to all in L.A. and California.
Thank you, Jeremy! Much appreciated!
It was a treat to wake up to this excellent piece on a timeless album.Thank you.
Thank you, Jeffrey!

Fuck, Scott, you just made me tear up. Much love back to you, brother.
Damn! Wasn’t the Pioneer Chicken located on Echo Park and Sunset (including the market), and not Alvarado?

Hey, Phil! Lovely to hear from you. I had a nice email chat with Mr. Gruel about a decade back — a hilarious dude, as you might imagine!

That would make more sense - pretty sure The Haunted House was gone by the 1970s!
Love this!
1. Zevon rules.

Nice! I’m probably gonna buy a print for my wall!
Keep Me in Your Heart was played at both my father’s and my mother’s memorial services.
