One of my faves - thank you for giving it space hear. I had forgotten the English/German edit and not known its origin. Of course Bowie at Live Aid was pretty mind-blowing as well.

I have written up about the musical production “Just For One Day” taking place at London’s Old Vic - and not being in that location, was guessing this song is central to the narrative. Excellent mind jog!

Two vegans were passing by a fast food restaurant, where the smell of gyros was tempting them mightily. They talked it over for a while, the pros and cons of breaking their lifestyle. But the winning argument - We can eat gyros, just for one day.

Ha! Ya know, I've been a vegetarian for about seven years now — and while my carnivorous cravings have all but vanished at this point, gyros is/are actually one of the few meat items that I find dangerously tempting.

Shortly after Bowie's death, it was time for the mundane task of car registration renewal. Dammit, I'd never had a personalized plate before and I was still reeling that Bowie was gone. And just like that, JST41DY plates were slapped on my car. Remarkably, very few people get it. Most conflate it with "one day at a time" which is funny because it took a few glasses of wine to pony up the extra cost of the plates. Thanks for this post - memories of suburban-angsty kids smoking Sobranie Black Russians, listening to the "Heroes" German/English version, blissfully ignorant of true existential angst. Blondie with Fripp was just the icing on the cake.

The first time a David Bowie song was on American Top 40, Casey Kasem referred to him as "David Boooie" (like baba). The Feb. 24, 1973, show (the song is Space Oddity for those playing at home). I still laugh every time I hear it.

Andrew Hickey's podcast the History of Rock in 500 Songs has had a number of interesting "six degrees of separation" type references to how pre-Bowie David Jones was just on the outskirts of a lot of a lot of mid-1960s British bands and music before he himself broke.

Yeah, Bowie’s 60s history is pretty interesting. He made some pretty good singles back then, too!

Good luck with your book - I’m just beginning one. It’s already had an impact on the way I do Substack but I plan to do both.

Heroes. What do you make of Peter Gabriel’s version? If it wasn’t for Bowie’s vocal performance I’d be very keen on Gabriel’s version. But I’ve never heard anyone top Bowie for emotional heft.

Live Aid is mentioned in the comments - I was there and Bowie’s performance was so strong. There was crying.

Honestly? I've never heard Gabriel's version — he kind of lost me around Security and I never went back. But I'll check it out. Best of luck with your book, too!

I used to have this on an Uncut compilation CD of Bowie covers that I can no longer find. It was great to hear it again. All the best on wrapping up the book!

I did not know there was a video to "Skateaway", I am also looking forward to listening to more WIWS. I stayed up way later than usual last night listening to Robert Trujilo and woke up feeling alright.

Up to the eyebrows reminds me of "Work" from Songs for Drella.
