Great piece. My Pepi story: I live in a Northern new Jersey town where some Yankees lived on the early 60s. (I didn't move there until '98). When they hosted the all star game, the Yankees held a fanfest at which Pepi appeared. I got his autograph and told him that i lived in that town, a couple of blocks from where he lived in 1964. He got a thousand yard stare and said, That was a long time ago. He struck me as a really nice guy.

This piece kicked ass. I’m (barely) too young to have known Joe as more than a name on a baseball card, but this piece makes me love the dude.
