In the first English translation of Freud’s book “On the Interpretation of Dreams” he was mistakenly quoted as saying “Sometimes a cigar is only a cigar”. Somehow it stuck—in a cigar-obsessed Vienna.
Recent scholarship reveals that he was actually referring to bananas, one of which he was eating as he wrote. 🍌
So play on with your banana—proudly and without shame.
Yeah, Not my fav either, but I have 1 memory, a good one, of that song from my honeymoon cruise in 2005 they played that song in the dining room and everyone got up and danced around the room to it. Even my husband, who hates that sort of thing. Amazing what wine can do.
May I suggest Ben and the Platano Group? Band of session musicians who released a very funky LP, Paris Soul in 1971, and paid homage to their namesake - the plantain, a humble and delicious relative of the banana - with this cut:
From what I understand, platano may refer to both the plantain and banana, but my love for fried plantains goes farther than my (limited) affection for the banana, so I'll stick with my original statement.
This was a lot of fun! Who knew there were so many banana songs?
The only other banana song that immediately came to mind (besides the Belafonte track, which I’ve never really enjoyed) was Bananafishbones by the Cure from their 1984 album The Top, a fairly psychedelic effort (certainly by their standards): https://youtu.be/1WCozfDacm4?si=9zunvUp7d8ErqqL1
Is there video somewhere of you playing ripping leads on a banana?!?
Hahaha - if only the banana hadn’t crumbled just as I was about to lay some potassium-enhanced pentatonic licks on everybody!
Rest easy my boy.

Raffi’s “Bananaphone,” one of the two tolerable Raffi songs.
What about The Banana Boat song by Harry Belefonte?
I was never a big fan of that one, though I’m happy Belafonte did well with it!
Looks like I might be the first to state the obvious. Both your dream and your playlist are utterly... bananas.

Great, now I can't get the 'Bananas in pyjamas' theme song out of my head
Great list, Dan.
Harry Chapin's 30,000 lbs of bananas?!?
I’m not much of a Chapin fan, I must admit - but that certainly qualifies!

Ooh, not hip to this at all — and I do love a good fried plantain! Thanks!

First VU album cover deserves honorable mention in the banana sweepstakes.
