My first recognition of Elton John — of recognizing one of his songs on the radio — is also Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. I think that was also helped by an episode of One Day at a Time from around there where Valerie Bertinelli dressed up as Elton and Mackenzie Phillips dressed as Kiki Dee and did the song for some in-episode variety show. https://youtu.be/TRAfBkqtGUQ?si=IIwm2EdeZ4rbjQ3o
I hate what is happening to LA, but I am enjoying the essays.
I'm 66 and Elton John's emergence as a mega star was the back drop to my troubled, angst ridden high school days. I hitchhiked one day and got picked up by a car load of stoners in mid 70s who had the Yellow Brick Road 8track playing over and over in their car . That album will always take me back to that day and how the title track spoke to my heart unlike any song had up to then. Thanks for a great memory.

Thanks, John! And I totally remember that episode - I actually interviewed Mackenzie about it many years ago!
I didn't know that history of that album. Really enjoyed hearing your experiences as a youngster in L.A. discovering Elton in the wax museum.
His and Bernie's music was the soundtrack for my first year at college. How lucky were we?
SO lucky — it's still amazing to me how many incredible songs they came up with in such a relatively short span of time!

While he's known now more for his many hit singles, he took making albums seriously as well.
I rarely think about such things but I think Elton would be a wonderful name for a cat.
Agreed!
Another good one, Dan -- keep em coming!
Thanks, man! Will do!
So wonderful love this and Elttoni
